Overview

EVOPOS stores your data in a database on a server computer on your local network. Each time you open EVOPOS, it connects to that server computer. If EVOPOS can't reach the database, a connection screen appears instead of the usual login.

From this screen you can retry the connection, update your connection details, or close EVOPOS.

Where to find it: This screen appears automatically when you open EVOPOS and it can't connect to the database.

Before you start:

  • EVOPOS works over your local network only. Your computer must be connected to the same network as the server computer.
  • The server computer must be turned on and connected to the network.
  • To update your connection details, you need to know the details of the server computer that holds your EVOPOS database.

How-to Guides

How to retry the connection

  1. Check that the server computer is turned on and has finished starting up.
  2. Check that your computer is connected to the network.
  3. On the connection screen, click Retry.

EVOPOS connects to the database and opens as normal.

How to update your connection details

  1. On the connection screen, click Connection Details.
  2. Update the details to match the server computer that now holds your EVOPOS database.
  3. Confirm your changes.

EVOPOS connects to the database using the new details and opens as normal.

Warning: Only change your connection details if your server has moved to another computer or EVOPOS support has asked you to. Incorrect details will stop EVOPOS from connecting to your data.

How to close EVOPOS from the connection screen

  1. On the connection screen, click Close.

EVOPOS closes. Fix the cause of the problem, then open EVOPOS again.

Troubleshooting

No computers can connect to EVOPOS

Problem: The connection screen appears on every computer in the business.

Cause: The server computer is turned off, asleep, restarting (for example after Windows updates) or disconnected from the network.

Fix: Go to the server computer and make sure it's turned on, awake and connected to the network. Wait for it to finish starting up, then click Retry on each computer.

Only one computer can't connect

Problem: Other computers open EVOPOS normally, but one computer shows the connection screen.

Cause: That computer has lost its connection to the local network.

Fix: Check the network cable or Wi-Fi connection on that computer. Once it's back on the network, click Retry.

The connection fails after moving the server

Problem: The connection screen appears after your EVOPOS database was moved to a different computer.

Cause: EVOPOS is still using the details of the old server computer.

Fix: Click Connection Details and update the details to match the new server computer. See How to update your connection details above.

Retry still doesn't connect

Problem: You've checked the server and network, but Retry still fails.

Cause: There may be a problem with the server computer or network that needs further investigation.

Fix: Click Close and contact EVOPOS support for help.

Tips & Best Practice

  • Check whether other computers can open EVOPOS. If they can, the problem is with your computer's network connection. If they can't, the problem is with the server computer.
  • Keep the server computer turned on during business hours and set it so it doesn't go to sleep.
  • Schedule Windows updates and restarts on the server computer outside business hours.
  • Don't change your connection details just to see if it helps. In most cases, turning on the server computer and clicking Retry fixes the problem.

Tip: Write down the name of your server computer and keep it somewhere handy. It makes it quicker to check the right computer when this screen appears.
